Genymotion Desktop and standard (non admin) user accounts on Windows

Overview

This article discusses using Genymotion Desktop on Windows with standard (non-admin) user accounts.

Admin rights recommendation

Due to limitations with VirtualBox on Windows, it is highly recommended to use a Windows account with admin rights to run Genymotion Desktop.

Troubleshooting when admin rights are not possible

If admin rights are not possible, you may encounter the error "Unable to start a device".

If admin rights are not possible, you may encounter the error "An error has occurred while trying to create a virtualbox host-only network interface".

To fix these errors, try the following steps:

1. Log in to Windows with an admin account.

2. Open VirtualBox and go to File > Host Network Manager...

3. Delete all the excess VirtualBox host-only ethernet adapters.

4. Reboot your PC and log in with the standard user account.

5. Run Genymotion.

QEMU note

QEMU support is still experimental and buggy on Windows at the moment.

Until it is stable, we recommend using VirtualBox hypervisor on Windows.
